Domestic work sits under Part P of the Building Regulations, and the list of work that has to be notified is shorter than most people expect. In England and Wales it is:

• a new circuit
• a new or replacement consumer unit (fuse box)
• any addition or alteration inside a room containing a bath or shower, a room with a sauna heater, or around a swimming pool

Adding a socket outlet to an existing bedroom circuit, swapping a light switch or replacing an accessory is not notifiable. It still has to comply with BS 7671.

Notifiable work has two lawful routes. Tell building control in advance and pay for their inspection, or use an electrician registered with a government-authorised competent person scheme, who certifies the work and notifies afterwards. Norspark is NAPIT registered, which is one of those schemes.

Typical jobs: consumer unit changes, full and partial rewires, kitchen and bathroom circuits, cooker and shower supplies, outside lights, extractor fans, smoke and heat alarms, fault-finding. Consumer units in homes now have to be non-combustible, and socket outlets rated up to 32 A need 30 mA RCD protection.
