If something is wrong right now, that is a fault find: a tripping RCD, a dead socket, lights flickering, a burning smell near the board. If something needs replacing, that is usually a consumer unit (fuse box), a full or partial rewire, or worn sockets, switches and lighting. If something needs adding, that is a new circuit for a cooker or an electric shower, extra sockets, outdoor sockets and lighting, or a supply to a garage or garden room. If something needs checking or certifying, that is an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for a sale, a mortgage, an insurer or a tenancy, or Portable Appliance Testing (PAT).

What people ring up and say, and what it turns out to be:

• "The fuse box keeps tripping" is normally RCD nuisance tripping, the leakage from several appliances adding up on one device
• "I need an electrical safety certificate" is an EICR
• "The plug testing" is PAT, properly called in-service inspection and testing
• "The ring main" is a ring final circuit
