Electric Shower Installation in NR4

Most houses can take an electric shower, but not every house can take the one you have picked. The bigger the shower, the more it pulls, and the question is whether your fuse box has a spare way and your supply can carry it. We check that before quoting, not after.

A shower needs its own circuit, its own cable and a pull-cord isolator on the ceiling. Swapping like for like, the existing cable is usually fine and it is a half-day job. Going up a size, say 8.5 kW to 10.5 kW, normally means a thicker cable all the way back to the fuse box. That is what turns a morning into a day.

Either way the job finishes the same: the shower gets tested properly and you get an Electrical Installation Certificate for it.

Section 701 of BS 7671 puts the shower in Zone 1, so 30 mA RCD protection is required on every circuit in the bathroom. We fit an RCBO per circuit, so a fault on the shower leaves your lighting on. A new shower circuit is notifiable under Part P twice over: it is a new circuit, and it is work in a special location.
