Industrial Electrical Testing in NR5

Industrial testing covers the fixed installation feeding the plant: incoming supply, main switchgear, busbars, sub-mains, distribution boards, motor circuits and isolators. The electrical equipment of the machines themselves sits under BS EN 60204-1, which is a different standard from BS 7671. Worth settling where that boundary falls before anyone puts a price on the work.

Environment drives the intervals more than age does. Dust in grain stores and feed mills, washdown in food processing, salt air on the coast, vibration and heat around motors and drives.

Regulation 652.2 of BS 7671 recognises an alternative to periodic inspection where an effective preventive maintenance regime is already in place under suitably skilled supervision. The records have to stand up: the item inspected, the required frequency, the result, any remedial work carried out, who carried it out, and who is responsible at supervisory level. If you already run planned maintenance, that route is often worth more than a five-yearly report.

Isolation is the part that costs production time. Safe isolation follows HSE guidance HSG85, with lock-off and proving dead on every circuit, so testing gets scheduled into shutdown weeks and planned maintenance windows.
