Licensed Electrician in NR2

There is no electrician's licence in the UK. No government body issues one, and for most electrical work it is not illegal for an unqualified person to pick up the tools. What actually exists is registration with a competent person scheme, and that is what people mean when they search for a licensed electrician.

The government-authorised schemes for domestic electrical installation are BESCA, Blue Flame Certification, Certsure, NAPIT and OFTEC. Registration involves an assessment of qualifications and periodic inspection of completed work, renewed annually. A registered electrician self-certifies notifiable work under Part P and notifies building control afterwards, so you avoid a separate building control application and its fee.

Two things are worth checking on any quote you receive, ours included: ask to see the scheme card and check the expiry date, then ask which work types the registration covers, because scope varies from one registration to the next. NAPIT assess our work on site, not just our paperwork, and registration has to be renewed. Ask to see the certificate on the day if you want it.
